Named after a Sicilian outlaw comes the Testalonga wines from South Africa, produced by winemaker Craig Hawkins. This is an organic and natural skin contact wine which stands out for more than just its striking label – as organic wine production is actually still fairly uncommon in SA.
The grapes come from old bush vines, hand picked, whole bunch pressed, wild fermented in stainless steel and bottled unfiltered and unrefined.
A mild haze of pale lemon with green apple and mild smokiness on the nose. The palate is a whole orchard of apples, lime zest and white peach. Floral and flint with a touch of salinity. A little effervescence initially, bone dry, crisp high acidity with a great textural mouthfeel.
A great wine. One of the most interesting wines Ive tried recently, a slow sipper, that really grows on you. I liked the first glass but loved the second!
If you haven’t already been enticed by the label and looking to try something different, this one is highly recommended
