Who would have thought a whole exhibition dedicated to soil could be so creatively elegant. I was lucky to attend the private preview of SOIL at @somersethouse last week- an immersive and thought provoking exploration vital role soil plays in our ecosystems, culture, and survival.
The exhibition features works by contemporary artists, designers, and researchers, aiming to inspire a deeper connection with the ground beneath our feet and encourage conversations on how we can follow more sustainable practices.
One of the key sponsors of the exhibition is Familia Torres, a renowned Spanish winemaking family with a strong commitment to sustainability. Familia Torres has long been a pioneer in environmentally conscious viticulture, and their involvement in Soil aligns perfectly with the exhibition’s themes. The winery has implemented numerous sustainable practices, surrounding Regenerative Agriculture, Climate Change Mitigation and Preserving Indigenous Grape Varieties.
Two of the wines being served were from The Clos Ancestral Range- celebration of their commitment to preserving and reviving ancestral and indigenous grape varieties, many of which were on the brink of extinction. This unique range showcases wines made from historic Catalan grapes, pre-phylloxera Forcada and Moneu, which have been carefully recovered and cultivated using sustainable practices. By focusing on these resilient, climate-adapted varieties, Familia Torres not only honours the rich viticultural heritage of the region but also contributes to the biodiversity and future sustainability of winemaking. Each bottle from the Clos Ancestral Range tells a story of rediscovery, innovation, and respect for the land, perfectly aligning with the ethos of the Soil exhibition.
